Panthers 2012 Outlook

May 7, 2012 2:32 pm

The Carolina Panthers were one of the NFl's most exciting teams in 2011. Cam Newton was a stud for the team, and made headlines every week. It seems as if all Cam Newton did last season was break records. He revived the Panthers offense, bringing the unit from 32nd in the league in 2010 to 5th in 2011. That's a 27-spot jump.

In my 3rd consecutive outlook on the Panthers, I will go over some topics, such as the offense, defense, special teams, and overall ability of the team. This is a PREDICTION. Let's get this thing going.

OFFENSE

If you look at the first paragraph in this outlook, you can see how the offense should be considered the strength of this football team. When John Fox was head coach, the Panthers always had a strong defense. Now, it's the exact opposite. With Cam Newton leading the Panthers, offense could be what the league expects from this team.
The Panthers signed a few players to upgrade the offense this offseason, including RB Mike Tolbert and OG Mike Pollak. They also traded RB Mike Goodson to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for OT Bruce Campbell. In the Draft, the Panthers selected OL Amini Silatolu in the second round and WR Joe Adams in the fourth.
Silatolu should be a starter on the O-Line day one, and Adams could work his way into some gametime during the season. Mike tolbert has been brought in to be the team's fullback and should succeed well.
With Cam Newton, Steve Smith, Double Trouble (DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart), Tolbert, Brandon LaFell, the return of Davis Gettis, Kealoha Pilares, Greg Olsen, and Joe Adams; the Panthers could have the league's best offense already.

DEFENSE

This was a struggle point for the team last season. It was laid to waste with injuries in 2011. Projected starter DT Ron Edwards went down in training camp, and Jon Beason and Thomas Davis went down in consecutive weeks during the season. Starting DTs Terrell McClain and Sione Fua also went down consecutive weeks. Overall, this defense was far from full power.

The Panthers made some moves this offseason in getting some talent and depth, signing S Haruki Nakamura, S Reggie Smith, DE Jyles Tucker, and LB Kenny Onatulu. They also let go of a strong veteran in LB Dan Connor

In the draft, the Panthers grabbed LB Luke Keuchly in the first round, DE Frank Alexander in the fourth, CB Josh Norman in the fifth, and S D.J. Campbell in the seventh. All are excellent players and should be able to contribute day one. LB Luke Keuchly should be a starter from day one, but if Thomas Davis can remain healthy, they could be in for rotation on the outside LB spot.

If all goes well, with progression from the young DTs and the return of the starters plus the new crop from the NFL Draft succeeding, this Panthers defense could be a nasty one, possibly a top-10 talent.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Another noticeable weakness for the Panthers in 2011, the special teams unit was a mess. The punt team allowed 3 returns for TDs, the punt return unit couldn't get anywhere, and kick team missed 3 clutch field goals that cound have won games for Carolina.
The Panthers signed K Justin Medlock to put pressure on incumbent starting K Olindo Mare. They also released 7-year P Jason Baker due to salary cap reasons. They drafted P Brad Nortman in the sixth round to fill the punter shoes, and drafted D.J. Campbell in the seventh round to help with special teams. They also drafted WR Joe Adams in the fourth round because of his great punt returning skils, returning four punts for TDs in 2011.
With al the signings and moves this offseason on speacial teams, the Panthers can expect a great improve in every area on this unit's ability.

OVERALL

The 2012 Carolina Panthers should be a playoff calibur team. With the offense, defense, and special teams all looking like they are improving, a 10 win season is the least we can expect from Carolina. I am predicitng a 12-win season, a division crown, and at least an NFC title game.

Tonight starts the new Carolina Panthers: They can establish themselves into a new level of greatness. The debt is paid. Now it is time to take advantage and use this new system to take over the NFL.

This season, it feels like the Panthers are an expansion team. They can rewrite their own History and change this season. From day one, the Panthers need to get good enough to win the SuperBowl right now. It means the fans have to change as well. It's time to bring more energy and excitement to Bank Of America Stadium...kind of like some sort of Church Revival.

Lord, Have Mercy!! Panthers don't have any.....

The time for new excitement and the pain of releasing the former history is out! The Panthers will build by establishing a growth around a system they can only hope will remain in first place once we get there. No longer should Panthers fans wait until we succeed before we root for a Touchdown! It's our game too! It's our home! The first name on the team is the Community name!

Now Barbecue Something, Panthers fans! Have a great night tonight!

Panthers 2011 Outlook

April 23, 2011 4:33 pm

The 2011 Carolina Panthers will be totally different from their 2010 counterparts. They'll have a new coach, offensive and defensive style, and a gameplan that should be very different. The only problem really affecting the Panthers at this moment would be the lockout. No free agency, OTAs, or workouts can be conducted. Worst of all, the players can't make contact with the new coaching staff, which means the playbook and style of play can't be learned either. Dispite these obsticles that are facing the Panthers, they will be a stronger team, no doubt about it. Once the lockout is lifted and things resume as usual in the offseason, the players and coaches will be able to form together and learn Coach Rivera's new style of play. Although the Panthers may still be a weak team because of the lockout knocking things out of shape, they will play better, and could be a surprise team; such as the 1999 Indianapolis Colts or the 2008 Miami Dolphins.
As a Panthers fan myself, I remain optimistic every season and believe my Panthers will be a Super Bowl team; even though sometimes this isn't always true. I see the Panthers being the surprise team of 2011, in which they will build a record of 9-7 to 12-4; which would be dramatic improvements over 2010.

2011 NFC South Standings prediction:
Tampa Bay 12-4
Carolina 11-5
Atlanta 7-9
New Orleans 7-9

Okay, call me crazy, but that's my true prediction. Those five losses should be: one to Tampa Bay, one to New Orleans, Detroit, Tennesee, and Minnesota.
